Nine people suspected of being in the United States illegally were detained at the Maryland State Police JFK Highway Barrack in Cecil County late last week, according to state police.

The nine were in a Chevrolet van with Arizona tags that a state police trooper stopped along northbound I-95 in Joppa Thursday for speeding, according to Maryland State Police Public Information Officer Greg Shipley.

The driver did not have a license, Shipley said, and when the trooper investigated further, he discovered that none of the other occupants had any type of identification.

"Ultimately, they [ICE] took charge of the case," Shipley said, adding that it appeared that the individuals were in the country illegally.

The people who were detained are Eddie Gerrero-Morales, Jose Garcia-Gomez, Rafael Polito-Perez, Moises Hernandez-Delcid, Cecilio Cortez-Hernandez, Carlos Chico, Julio Garcia-Taba, Emeterio Shilon-Perez and Juan Carlos Merida-Gomez.

An ICE media representative said he would try to contact the case officers for more information but had not responded back by 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
