Border Patrol Agents Nab Hondurans Following Texas Break-In

    (Friday, March 06, 2009)

Del Rio, Texas – Border Patrol agents from the Carrizo Springs, Texas station arrested a group of Honduran nationals Wednesday, recovering more than $5,000 worth of items stolen from a local ranch in the process.

A Carrizo Springs agent responded to a call from a local foreman, who reported that a number of items had been stolen from a ranch house. The agent discovered footprints leading away from the house. After following the tracks and with the aid of Customs and Border Protection helicopter pilot, agents came upon 10 subjects. A search of their backpacks turned up all of the items reported missing by the ranch foreman.

Upon interviewing the suspects, agents later learned that two of their number were alien smugglers who had approached the other eight – all from Honduras - at the Nuevo Laredo train station. The two smugglers, one from Guatemala and one from Honduras, told the group that they were familiar with the area north of the border and could guide them.

Agents also were told that the two smugglers led the group to a ranch house, where they told the group to wait in the brush while they went inside to get food and water. When the helicopter flew overhead, agents were told; the group wanted to surrender but was told by the smugglers to hide. As they hid, the smugglers loaded all of the stolen items into the backpacks of the other eight subjects.

Agents recovered more than $5,500 worth of stolen property, including: two laptop computers, several cameras, knives and other assorted items.

The eight original members of the group were detained and processed for illegal entry into the United States. The other two were charged with alien smuggling and may face additional state charges for burglary. The recovered property was turned over to the Dimmit County Sheriff’s Office.
