Border Patrol Arrest Man Wanted by California Authorities

Calexico, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro, Calif. area yesterday arrested a male convicted sex offender approximately 30 miles west of the Calexico, Calif. port of entry.

Border Patrol agents from the El Centro station arrested Juan Herrera, a Mexican national, after he made an illegal entry into the United States. He was subsequently transported to the El Centro Border Patrol station for processing.

During processing, record checks revealed Herrera was convicted on one count of felony sexual assault with a minor in Santa Clara County, Calif., for which he was sentenced to five months in jail and three years probation. Herrera also had an active warrant issued by the Santa Clara County sheriff’s office for probation violation and a second warrant issued by the San Jose Police Department in California for sexual assault and domestic abuse. The warrant issued by the San Jose police department was confirmed and Herrera was extradited.

According to Jeffrey A. Calhoon, chief patrol agent of the El Centro Border Patrol, Herrera’s apprehension and extradition is one facet of the Border Patrol’s national strategy.
