Border Patrol discovers tunnel in Nogales home

On the outside, you'd never notice anything unusual about this house, but inside, Border Patrol agents found a tunnel in the works, and this one was being built from the U.S. to go under the street into Mexico.

Children walk by the yellow house every day, unaware that inside, people were digging a tunnel.

It was in front of the house that Border Patrol agents questioned some people on Wednesday.

Turns out they were here illegally.

It's when the agents went inside, they found sleeping bags and bags of fast food and a tunnel.

Agent Jim Hawkins said, "The tunnel runs about 20 feet, not finished. There were tools lying around and obvious works was just recent on the tunnel."

This is the third time drug smuggers used this house as a cover for tunnels. The house is located about 80 feet from the Nogales Wash.

"Often what happens when we find tunnels, they are attempting to link into the city's sewer system. They already have a pre-cut tunnel so they only have to go a short distance getting into that storm sewer and then go from there."

What makes this tunnel different from the previous two is that smugglers were digging from the U.S. to Mexico instead of the other way around.

This latest tunnel is within blocks of at least four other tunnels that were discovered.

"It is getting harder and harder to smuggle through Tucson Sector so they are having to resort to unusual measures. Agents in Nogales have to deal with tunnels from time to time."

Drug tunnels along International Street have become common. It's something residents live with.

Marisol Martinez said, "For me, it's bad, but it's normal 'cuz from right here, they find tunnels every time."

Border Patrol officials tell me the city of Nogales intends to seal the tunnel.

Well you have to give the illegals one thing. They sure know how to work hard and dig tunnels.
