4 Mexicans indicted for sex trafficking

Four Mexican citizens in the Houston area have been indicted on charges of running a sex-trafficking ring that involved forcing undocumented female immigrants into prostitution, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

The alleged ringleader of the operation, Gerardo "El Gallo" Salazar, 40; his two nephews, Angel Moreno Salazar, 24, and Jose Luis Moreno Salazar, 20; and an associate, Salvador Fernando Molina Garcia, 37, are charged with conspiracy to smuggle minor Mexican girls and young Mexican women into the United States and forcing them to be prostitutes.

Gerardo Salazar is accused of using deception, threats and physical and psychological force to compel the minors and young women to be prostitutes in Houston-area bars. The alleged conspiracy also involved forcing the girls and women to relinquish all their prostitution earnings to the defendants.

The indictment alleges that Gerardo Salazar forced two Mexican teen-agers to be prostitutes. It also alleges he beat a third young Mexican woman for encouraging another girl to quit prostitution and leave, and beat a fourth for failing to alert him to a co-worker's mistakes.

Angel Salazar allegedly required one of the prostitutes to turn her earnings over to him each day, and Salvador Garcia is alleged to have beaten another because he thought she hid some of her earnings from him.

Gerardo Salazar is a fugitive and a warrant for his arrest is outstanding. The other three defendants are in federal custody and are expected to appear before a U.S. magistrate next week. It wasn't clear whether they had yet obtained attorneys.
