Border Patrol increasing its ranks

Given the uproar over the jailing of border agents Ramos and Compean (among others), some expressed their fears that no one would want to go to work for the Border Patrol. Well, so far that’s not the case, according to this AP storyfrom last week:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Border Patrol graduated a second class of recruits within a week for the first time Thursday, days after National Guard troops began leaving the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, N.M., produced 39 graduates Monday and 36 more Thursday, part of a plan to add 6,000 agents by the end of the year for a total of about 18,000. There are about 14,000 agents now.
This is particularly interesting given the fact that the BP is very selective, reviewing 30 applications for every agent it wants to hire. Overall attrition is reported at 8 percent.
I suppose the true test of the effect of the controversy will be whether applications to the BP drop now that the issues involved in the case are so widely known.
Could it be that those who predicted this will decimate the BP might be . . . wrong?

I think Bush's plan to weaken the Border Patrol may backfire.
