Hidalgo, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Hidalgo/Reynosa International Bridge seized a 9mm handgun found hidden on the body of a pedestrian traveling south into Mexico.

On July 14, CBP officers working outbound enforcement operations at the Hidalgo/Reynosa International Bridge came in contact with a male pedestrian walking south into Mexico. At the time of contact, the male traveler attempted to abscond and run north back into the United States. CBP officers reacted quickly and were able to prevent the male pedestrian from absconding.

During a pat-down search for weapons, officers found the traveler in possession of a 9mm Beretta handgun. The unloaded weapon was found hidden in the traveler’s waist line. The traveler, identified as Aaron De Leon, a Mexican citizen, age 20 from Austin, Texas was arrested by CBP officers on a federal charge of unlicensed export of items on the U.S. munitions list.

After his arrest, De Leon was transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who continue to investigate this failed smuggling attempt. Pending appearance before a U.S. Magistrate, De Leon remains incarcerated. CBP officers seized the handgun and a 9mm magazine.

Dave Fluty, CBP acting port director said, “I commend our officers for their quick actions in preventing this traveler from absconding.â€
