Border Patrol Showcases New Horse Patrol Unit

EDINBURG - The Border Patrol has set up a new horse patrol unit. They showcased the new animals at their headquarters in Edinburg on Friday morning.

Border Patrol agents in the Valley have been using horse patrols since 1988. Those animals were leased on contract. Border Patrol now owns six horses under what's called the Noble Mustang Program.

The horses were wild mustangs rounded up from federal lands in the American West then trained by inmates at a federal prison in Kansas. The new horses have already been out on patrol along the Rio Grande.
