Suspected immigrant smuggler arrested after spike-strip stop

    UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM

    3:43 p.m. June 30, 2008

JACUMBA – A driver suspected of transporting and smuggling illegal immigrants into the United States was arrested Monday after authorities used a spike strip to stop the vehicle.
Eleven people, including the driver, were detained about 1:30 p.m. after a 15-minute or so pursuit on eastbound Interstate 8 near Jacumba, said Jason Rodgers, a Border Patrol agent.

The vehicle was halted by the spike strips but its driver drove over the side of the road in trying to elude agents a second time, Rodgers said.
    No one was hurt.

Everyone in the vehicle was detained. Rodgers said they were being held while agents determine their nationality and residency status.
