ROMA, Texas -- The U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the CBP helicopter forced down in the Lower Rio Grande Valley had its main rotor damaged by a rock launched from the ground.

A CBP statement issued Thursday says the assailant who launched the rock Tuesday afternoon hasn’t been identified.

The two-member crew of the American Eurocopter AS350 helicopter by was able to land the damaged aircraft safely without injury in a vacant lot in the border town of Roma.

The crew was from the CBP McAllen Air and Marine Branch was supporting Border patrol agents in Roma when it was downed.

A rock launched from the ground struck a Border Patrol helicopter, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in a vacant lot, the Associated Press reports.

Whoever threw the rock could not be found, CBP said in a statement.

The two-member crew of the American Eurocopter AS350 were not injured when they landed safely in the border town of Roma.

The crew was helping Border Patrol agents in Roma when the incident happened, the AP reported.
