ADA — Ohio Northern University officials say claims that illegal immigrants are working on construction projects on campus are simply not true.
“There is no truth to that rumor,” school President Kendall Baker said in a statement sent to newspaper.
Jim Negron, executive vice president of Corna/Kokosing Construction Company, the general contractor for the projects in question, also responded in a statement sent from the school.
“Corna/Kokosing has policies and procedures in place that require each prospective employee, contractor or subcontractor to document his or her ability to be lawfully employed,” it read.
Bob Carder, ONU chief steward/HVAC technician and Local 84 representative for Ohio’s northwest district, claims that prior to a week ago, there were about 70 illegal immigrants working at the construction sites.
“The school turned its head. The reply was that it wasn’t their business,” he said.
Carder said that there was an interpreter at the sites because the workers could not speak English, making him and others suspect that they were illegal. He said the disappearance of them last week solidified their suspicions.
“They must not have been documented workers because they are gone,” he said.
Baker said he did not hear of rumors of illegal workers until contacted by the media a few days ago, saying the school investigated the allegations. He said the claim that there were undocumented workers a week ago is not true.
“The only thing I know and can say is that we don’t have any evidence whatsoever to substantiate that claim,” he said, saying that he trusts the construction company, which has had a long-time relationship with the school. “We have complete confidence in our construction company. There is no reason to believe that the claims are true, either now or a week ago.”
ONU currently has four construction projects ongoing. Corna/Kokosing of Westerville is handling the renovation of Lima Hall and new housing.
The school has made 37 beds in student housing available this summer to aid in the construction project. Baker said it reduces travel time for the workers, adding that the university benefits because the rental costs are being credited toward the construction costs.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn
