Border wars: No more lip service

    Tuesday, March 21, 2006

Mexico last year trumpeted a cooperative effort with the United States to stem drug gang violence just across the Texas border. Five months later the situation has changed -- for the worse.

Authorities now confirm that a drug gang has set up shop on U.S. soil while Mexico continues its uninterrupted siesta.

The situation In Laredo, Texas, is serious. Authorities say the Sinaloa drug cartel has established a staging area to gather intelligence and weapons. One U.S. official calls Laredo "a cesspool of cartel activity."

Traffickers have good reason to move north. If caught in the U.S., cartel members get America's softer justice. If arrested in Mexico, they face almost certain death from rival gangs in jail.

Can we expect the same violence in Laredo that has claimed Mexico's Nuevo Laredo, a key gateway into the United State for drug traffickers? Last year at least 15 police officers were murdered there by heavily armed drug thugs using machine guns -- even bazookas. Already this year the body count across the border from Laredo is up to 46.

After the U.S. last year briefly closed its consulate, Mexico agreed to cooperate with the U.S. to enhance law enforcement and target traffickers.

America no longer can afford more lip service from President Vicente Fox. The problem is here, now. A military response is warranted to crush the drug traffickers before an even greater infestation makes the task more difficult.

America can't afford more lip service from Boooosh and congress, either.

They need to get off their butts and enforce the laws.

Mexico obviously doesnt care. Its business as usual. More reasons we need the fence, and the National Guard stationed at the border.
