Arizona gov. cancels border meeting after boycott

Arizona gov. cancels border meeting after boycott
By MICHELLE PRICE (AP) – 6 hours ago

PHOENIX — Gov. Jan Brewer has called off a September border conference in Phoenix due to Mexican governors' objections to Arizona's tough new immigration enforcement law, though some officials are discussing holding the annual gathering elsewhere.

It was Arizona's turn to host the 28th annual U.S.-Mexico Border Governors Conference for four U.S. governors and six from Mexico. But Brewer said Wednesday the meeting was canceled because the Mexican governors planned to boycott it.

Brewer said she was disappointed about the boycott and hoped the governors of New Mexico, Texas and California would support her decision.

"The people of Arizona and the people of America support what Arizona has done," Brewer said. "For them to basically not attend here because of that, I think is unfair."

However, the governors of New Mexico and California are trying to go ahead with the conference in another state, with or without Arizona's participation, spokesmen said.

In a June letter, governors from the Mexican states of Baja California, Coahuila, Sonora, Chihuahua, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas said Arizona's new immigration law violates civil rights and has provisions based on ethnic and cultural prejudices. They suggested relocating the conference to a different U.S. border state.

The New York Times reported the cancellation of the Arizona conference Wednesday.

The Arizona law takes effect July 29 unless blocked by a court. It requires police officers, while enforcing other laws, to check a person's immigration status if there's a "reasonable suspicion" the person is here illegally. The law does not define reasonable suspicion, but police training materials say triggers for such checks can include speaking poor English, traveling in a crowded vehicle and hanging out in an area where illegal immigrants typically congregate.

Brewer, who denies that the law promotes racial profiling by law enforcement, said the conference would have been a good opportunity to discuss the Mexican governors' concerns.

"I just think it's a shame that they have responded this way," she said.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson thinks Brewer lacks the authority to cancel the conference and was surprised by her decision, said spokesman Gilbert Gallegos.

Richardson, a Democrat, still wants to hold the conference and is looking for another location, Gallegos said.

New Mexico could host the conference but that could be expensive, so ways to reduce costs are being considered, he said.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, thinks the meeting is a valuable time to work on border issues and also wants to go ahead with it, said spokesman Francisco Castillo.

"He is proud of the success they have accomplished over the years to tackle their shared challenges, and he looks forward to continuing the dialogue this year at an alternative site," Castillo said.

Schwarzenegger has not offered to hold the event in his state, and Castillo said he doesn't know yet if the governor will offer to host it. California was host to the meeting in 2008.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, would welcome meeting with any border governors to discuss common concerns but thinks staging a September conference at this point is "probably not feasible, regardless of where that would be held," spokeswoman Katherine Cesinger said. "That does take quite a bit of planning."

Brewer said she isn't ruling out attending the conference in another location, but her attendance would depend on when the meeting is held.

The pathetic thing about this is that NONE of the other border governors are coming to her defense, sounding as though they are on the side of mejico and their boycott.....

Rick Perry's response is disingenuous at best. What a weasel.

Sorry Texans, I call'em, the way I see them.

What better place to hold a border confrence than in Arizona where
it's hitting the fan. Sounds to me like their unwilliness to show up means
they're afraid they might have to admit there's a problem on the border.

    Buncha whiny sissy-babies.

No offense taken here, from where I stand looks like we "see em" the
    same way.

"If the race card is the only card in your hand, you're not playing with a full deck."

I love this saying of yours and I think it is appropriate here. They know they are not playing with a full deck. They don't want to see the numbers of how much they cost us either. They are all bluster and no substance. They respond with the logic of a child or pre-teen. They have no intention of having mature discussion and diplomacy. They want war and ObombUS and his keepers want to give it to them. These people are not hindered by "euro-concepts" such as hypocrisy. I have read their literature. They totally believe that the end justifies the means. They only engage in concepts that support their intention when they support their intention. Just like ObombUS and his people only use the law when it supports their intention - otherwise they bypass it or throw it away or over-rule it.

There is another thread here from yesterday about this new boycott and in that article are quotes from the Mexican leaders reiterating the false allegations of prejudice and more which is proof of my point - the cheap shot works for them and so they will not abandon it. Actual thought and consideration given to this issue is nil. They cannot afford to allow thought about it because they know that they are wrong. They want they want they want like a baby. If I were able to get the search function to work I would link the other article here.

This may sound a little like conspiracy/black helicopter stuff but
what are the chances that this is some kind of ruse to get them
to hold the conference in Mexico. You know, that place where
    drug cartels and hit-men abound??

    Just sayin....

Reminds me of how little commentary I caught (or was there little to none) about a recent Polish air flight.

Nah. I don't think it is a ruse. The explanations given are totally in-line with what the LaRazaMechaReconquista crowd have been washing the brains with for years. They HAVE to boycott in order to maintain their immature unreasonableness. Any diplomat, any politician can certainly understand Arizona's problems and would HAVE to make some concessions but they do not wish to negotiate anything. They would love to kick some Gringo A$$! And others should not think they won't be in the line of fire because they are the most prejudice people and hate African descent and U.S. born assimilated English speaking Mexican peoples possibly even more than they hate Gringos.

Here is where we play right into NWO ObombUS's hands. I am sure that if citizens organize their own border defense, independent of any government, or even if in co-operation with a government then FEMA and martial law can be activated. Indians remembering their long marches will laugh as citizens in Arizona are loaded up into the camps "for their own protection." And with what I am seeing many will probably willingly go - for their own protection. Then their homes and properties will be squatted on by illegals - just one of the possibilities that I see.

The Mexicans do not wish to be reasonable, mature, adult negotiators. They want what they want and they intend to get it and the ObombUS administration fully intends to give it to them. They will in effect cede the land back to Mexico but not really, displace the US citizens, and have a bunch of loyal new voters to prop up their sham. That is just the beginning.

Well, my cost cuttig suggestion is for the Governor of New Mexico and California along with the 6 Mexican governors get a room togther at the motel 6 and they can host their three day summit for under $200. Don't forget to leave the light on or you may find yourself getting a bonus......
