Breaking: Terry McAuliffe says DACA and 700,000 dreamers here to stay

    By PHILIP WEGMANN

If Terry McAuliffe is right, Reince Priebus just won a key victory against Stephen Bannon in the immigration debate raging inside the White House.
If Governor Terry McAuliffe is right, Reince Priebus just won a key victory against Stephen Bannon in theimmigration debate raging inside the White House.

After meeting with the Trump administration, reporters asked the governor if DACA would soon get the axe. McAuliffe's answer was definitive: "absolutely not." Score one for Priebus, who's
reportedly been championing a softer line on the issue.

Since taking the oath of office, President Trump has appeared to soften on the issue. Not long ago, he used to love railing against illegal immigration, including the young undocumented immigrants protected from deportation by DACA. Apparently just a big softie, Trump now says he's sympathetic to the plight of "these incredible kids."

The Obama-era program, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, shields young immigrants from deportation. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, over 700,000 applications have been approved since June 2016.

Supporters say it's the only fair policy for children brought to this country by their parents. Opponents call it a form of amnesty. And McAuliffe says it's here to stay.

While the White House hasn't officially ruled out ending the program, McAuliffe says that Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly "reiterated [the administration's] support for the dreamers here in this country and that the policy will continue."

That's news that will likely anger many in Trump's base, like those who hail from Breitbart News and NumbersUSA, who want to see a decrease in overall immigration. It's also a sign that Priebus has managed to soften the president's hard edge.

So much for the poem, "The Snake." The President only learned part of the lesson.

Well, I'm not sure this is reliable or in the right context or accurate. No one expected Trump to deport DACA's First. We always knew he would deport them last unless individually they were in those high priority groups, visa overstays, welfare users, criminals or hanging out with criminals, and "criminal" under Trump is a very broad range of laws being broken.

Keep demanding END DACA NOW. Trump hasn't issued the orders or a statement yet.

preibus and ryan are running the show and trump agreed to this before election, otherwise they would have continued the pull down of trump that was happening everyday from his own party. preibus and ryan couldn't keep their mouth's shut in public talk either and we all heard the contradictions that went unanswered/uncorrected by trump.

No we didn't expect him to deport the DACA illegals first, but we sure as hell expected him to keep his promise to end the program on day 1 of his presidency.

VIRGINIA GOVERNOR: TRUMP ADMINISTRATION WON’T GO AFTER DREAMERS

    Emily Cadei

    February 27, 2017

The Trump administration is not going to go after so-called Dreamers, the undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children. That was the unequivocal message Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said he got from the homeland security secretary, General John Kelly, this weekend.

“My indication from General Kelly was absolutely not,” McAuliffe told reporters Monday when asked about whether the White House plans to end the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which has allowed millions of Dreamers to stay in the country legally. The Democratic governor, who is chairman of the National Governors Association, said he met with Kelly for nearly an hour on Sunday and expressed confidence that “that is a policy that they won’t be pursuing.”

Speaking at a press conference on Capitol Hill with fellow governors and senators, McAuliffe also said that Kelly had “emphatically assured me that any legal person in this country will not be deported, not one single one. The only individuals that they are going after are those that are here illegally and have been involved in a criminal enterprise.” And he said Kelly promised that “there will be no random ICE stops on the streets of America.” (McAuliffe was using the acronym for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which is within the Department of Homeland Security.)

McAuliffe is part of a delegation of 46 governors in Washington for the National Governors Association’s annual winter meeting. In addition to their gathering with fellow governors and state officials over the weekend, the governors dined at the White House Sunday evening and met with the president and other White House officials Monday morning. McAuliffe said he voiced his concerns about Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts to the president.

“I did mention to the president last night that there has been a chilling effect, that people are scared in this country today, people who are legal residents,” McAuliffe recounted Monday. “I explained to him what General Kelly had said. He agreed.”

During the 2016 campaign, Trump promised to repeal DACA and its successor, Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, which were enacted through executive orders by President Barack Obama and granted legal status to Dreamers and their relatives. But since winning the election, the Republican real estate mogul has backed away from that rhetoric. While he has issued tough orders temporarily barring immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries and stepping up deportations of undocumented immigrants within the United States, the president has also expressed sympathy for the Dreamers.

“To me, it’s one of the most difficult subjects I have, because you have these incredible kids,” Trump said at last week’s press conference. Nonetheless, The Washington Post reported Sundaythat immigrant advocates have urged eligible DACA recipients who have not yet enrolled to do so, due to deportation fears.

McAuliffe said he urged Trump on Sunday to make a public statement reassuring immigrants they are not at risk of being rounded up and deported unless they have criminal records. “I said, ‘Well, Mr. President, I hope that you can get out there and get that message out because that is not the message…that the people in Virginia are feeling today. They are scared.’” The tone of his conversation with the president, McAuliffe added, was “very positive.”

I don't believe this was all agreed upon before the election. However, I do believe Preibus and Ryan are two of the primary reasons he didn't keep his promise. I also believe his little talk with Obama during the turnover has something to do with it too. That's just my opinion.

I'm one of the rare people here I guess that did not expect him to end the DACA 2012 program day one because it wasn't part of the Texas 26 state lawsuit. In fact the court ruled specifically that the DACA 2012 program would remain intact and was NOT part of the temporary injunction. Yes, the Judge took it upon himself to declare this in his ruling which was upheld by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

I would like for Trump to end it now. I want Trump to end it now, phase it out quickly or stop issuing permits and let those already out there expire, so that by March 2019 there are no unexpired DACA work permits floating around our country.
