Brief for 9 states backs Arizona immigration law

Brief for 9 states backs Arizona immigration law

    David Runk The Associated Press
    July 14, 2010 2:25 pm

DETROIT — Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has filed a legal brief on behalf of nine states supporting Arizona’s immigration law.

The Republican gubernatorial candidate said Wednesday that Michigan is the lead state backing Arizona in federal court. Michigan is joined by Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands.

Cox says states have the authority to enforce immigration laws and protect their borders.

The Arizona law would require state and local police to question and possibly arrest illegal immigrants during the enforcement of other laws such as traffic stops.

President Barack Obama’s administration recently filed suit to block it, saying immigration is a federal issue.

This is the first time I have heard from the Northern Mariana Islands.
I'm glad they decided to speak up on this important issue.
Hope to hear more from them in the future.

    The Northern Mariana Islands
/ˈnɔrðərn mɛəriˈænə ˈaɪləndz/ (help·info), officially the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), is a commonwealth in political union with the United States, occupying a strategic region of the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of fifteen islands about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines, at 15°1′2″N 145°4′5″E / 15.01722°N 145.06806°E / 15.01722; 145.06806. The United States Census Bureau reports the total land area of all islands as 179.01 square miles (463.63 km2).

The Northern Mariana Islands has a population of 80,362 (2005 estimate). The official 2000 census count was 69,221.[2] More than 90% of the Commonwealth's population lives on the island of Saipan. Of the fourteen other islands, only two, Tinian and Rota, have a significant population. The islands of Agrihan and Alamagan have fewer than ten residents, and the remaining ten islands are unpopulated. The Northern Mariana Islands have the lowest male to female sex ratio in the world with an average of 76 men to every 100 women.[3] That is due to the overwhelming female majority of foreign workers, especially in the garment industry.[4]

The Commonwealth's centre of government is located in the village of Capitol Hill on the island of Saipan. As the island is governed as a single municipality, most publications term "Saipan" as the Commonwealth's capital.

I wish the Northern Mariana Islands were not attached to this. They have a very unsavory reputation for using their ability to attach "made in the USA labels" to apparel manufactured there to operate sweatshops using labor from all over Asia. Discredited lobbyist Jack Abranoff was heavily engaged in lobbying for the NMIs to try to convince Congress not to bring enforcement of the islands' immigration policies under U.S. federal supervision. I believe the latter was scheduled to begin this summer.

It sounds like the officials of the island want the immigration laws enforce now.

Nine states back Arizona in federal immigration lawsuit

    04:47 PM

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of Arizona's immigration crackdown, is a candidate in Michigan's GOP gubernatorial primary. CAPTIONBy Carlos Osorio, APLed by Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, the chief legal officers of nine states and one U.S. territory just filed a friend-of-the-court brief supporting Arizona's controversial illegal immigration crackdown against a legal challenge by the Obama administration.

The brief was filed before a federal court in Arizona where a hearing on the federal suit has been scheduled for tomorrow.

In an interview with USA TODAY, Cox said he is defending a long tradition of state sovereignty. "Historically, states have stood up to solve problems that come their way, and that's what Arizona is attempting to do here," he said. Cox, the son of immigrants (dad was from Scotland and mom from Ireland), dismissed arguments that the Arizona law violates civil rights by requiring immigrants to prove their legal status.

"My mom always carried her green card with her driver's license," he said. Three of the attorneys general involved are running for governor this year: Cox, Bill McCollum in Florida and Tom Corbett in Pennsylvania. All are Republicans.
