Maher agrees to be deported

The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A British man suspected of stealing about $1.5 million worth of British currency in 1993 will be deported from Missouri to England.

Edward Maher has agreed to be deported, and a federal magistrate on Friday approved Maher's transfer to U.S. immigrations officials. He was being held in Springfield on federal charges of aggravated identity theft, document fraud and firearms violations.

Maher had been wanted in England in connection with the 1993 theft of British currency from an armored van.

He has been in federal custody in Greene County since his arrest Feb. 8 in Ozark, where authorities said he was living under his brother's name. Prosecutors accused Maher of using a Social Security card and other identification that was not issued to him and of illegally possessing four firearms.
