About 100 activists with the Brown Berets de Aztlan marched in downtown Riverside Saturday to protest the Jan. 21 deputy-involved shooting that left one of their members dead.
Sheriff's deputies said Annette Garcia of Perris had a knife when deputies arrived at her Lake Mathews home in the 16900 block of Lake Mathews Drive in response to a 7:58 p.m. report of a person threatening suicide, but activists have questioned the need to open fire on the woman.
She reportedly died from a bullet wound to the back. Garcia, who was in her late 20s, was a mother of three.
"We just want the truth to come out, and justice to happen," said Marek Kasprzyk, an investigator for an attorney representing Garcia's family.
He joined protesters as they chanted at University and Market streets, holding up signs written in English and Spanish.
Kasprzyk declined to talk specifically about what happened in the deputy-involved shooting, as did attorney Samuel Long, who was reached by telephone.
"This is a tragic situation," Long said.
He has been retained by Garcia's husband, Eddie Fisher, and Garcia's father-in-law.
"This family needs closure, and the sooner the sheriff's department investigation is concluded, the better it will be for everyone," Long said.
Some motorists in downtown Riverside honked and shouted in agreement with the protesters, while others wondered what all the noise was about.
Kasprzyk and others distributed fliers, saying that Garcia "was killed in cold blood by Riverside sheriffs" and "gunned down in the presence of her husband and children. She was shot in the back after the officer fired several shots."
Demonstrators held signs saying "racist pigs" and "police brutality." Some marched in tan uniforms with insignia reminiscent of Chicano protesters of the same name in the late 1960s and '70s.
The original Brown Berets were active in school walkouts in Los Angeles in 1968. At one point in 1972, a group of them went to Santa Catalina Island and claimed it for Mexico.
A sheriff's spokesman said it was unclear when the investigation of Garcia's death would be completed.
"I am not at all sure when it's done," Deputy Craig Roberts said.
According to sheriff's deputies, the first deputy to arrive at the address that night was confronted by a woman with a knife. The deputy, in fear of his life, opened fire, fatally wounding her.
The deputy who shot the woman, was put on paid administrative pending the outcome of the investigation, which is routine. Investigators from the sheriff's Perris station and the sheriff's Central Homicide Unit are handling the probe.

One of the attorneys is out marching with a group hostile to the sovereignty of the US. Now that makes a lot of sense.

The Brown Berets won, they have to be the dumbest bunch of lames. Imagine trying to make the country your ancestors fled to part of third world Mexico! The bone heads should be trying to make Mexico part of the US (not that I would like to see that). They are a racist group who are want a be Mexican nationals.

I find it almost humorous that the brown berets de aztlan would hold up any sign accusing the cops of being "racists pigs" when their entire reconquista agenda is based upon racism and hate!
Do these morons see the hypocrisy in that! Probably not, since the majority are probably anchor babies and illegal invaders with an average of a 6th grade education between the entire group!
How well did your coup d’état work out on Catalina Island?
