WASHINGTON — When the immigration bill was introduced in the Senate last week, U.S. Sen. David Vitter quickly jumped from the starting block, leading the opposition.

The Louisiana Republican took to the floor of the Senate on the first day railing against Z visas that would allow up to 12 million illegal aliens to be able to apply for legal permanent resident status, a step toward U.S. citizenship.

WASHINGTON (May 17, 2007)—Saying that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has consistently advocated for a comprehensive immigration reform bill, Bishop Gerald R. Barnes expressed reservations about the compromise immigration proposal announced in the Senate.

But it is important that the legislative process move forward, he added, so that improvements can be made to the legislation.

“Specifically, Congress should ensure that any final legislation contains a legalization program which is workable and includes family unity and a fair and realistic path to citizenship, a new worker program which provides participants a meaningful opportunity to obtain permanent residency, and the preservation of family unity as an integral part of the U.S. immigration system,â€

Backers of the immigration bill accuse Vitter of being a political opportunist who is beating the nativist drum for his own political gain.
Or could it be that he's one of the few Senators' willing to stand up for the American people.

    Vitter's lone voice of reason

Well I'm glad to see he has the guts to say what is needed to be said. His lone voice of reason; should not be dismissed by other senators who are following a path to a never ending illegal immigration flow. Where no sight of stoppage is to be found.

Its like they forgot to place the drain plug in before they filled up the bath tub.

Senators who are blindly following President Bush on his ill chosen path of making every illegal immigrant a citizen to curry his favor or risk his wrath; are weak of will. The President on this issue is wrong. Somebody has to tell him.
Compromise; yes; I'm for give and take; but blatantly writing a legislative bill just to get it done without any meaningful thought to what is written in it or its ramifications is just plain stupid. Following a repeated path that you know does not work is moronic. Telling us its the best they can do; is just lazy politics.
