SILER CITY, N.C. -- Police were looking for a man Sunday who allegedly kidnapped his 2-year-old son at gunpoint from his estranged girlfriend early that morning.

Jorge Sanchez Aguilera, 29, and three other men broke into the woman's house around 2 a.m., Chatham County sheriff's deputies said. Authorities said the men used duct tape to restrain the child's mother, grandfather and another relative.

Sanchez Aguilera allegedly threatened to kill them unless they gave him his son, Edwin Sanchez Gonzales.

Authorities said Sanchez Aguilera had posed a $2,500 bail for violating a domestic violence protective order in August.

He is considered armed and dangerous, and authorities said he could be on his way to South Carolina, where he has family.

The suspect’s burgundy Ford Expedition was stopped Sunday afternoon in Belmont in Gaston County. Police found two women and several children inside. They were taken to Chatham County, where they were questioned and released.

Anyone with information is being asked to the Chatham County Sheriffs Office at 542-2911.

Two wanted in toddler's abduction arrested

    By Jessica Rocha, Staff Writer
SILER CITY - A 2-year-old boy and the father who authorities say kidnapped him have not been found, but two others accused in the abduction are now in custody.

Edwin Sanchez Gonzales, 2, was taken from his mother’s Siler City home about 2 a.m. Sunday after his father, Jorge Sanchez Aguilera, and three others broke in, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

The intruders gathered up the adults, bound them with duct tape and threatened to kill them if they didn’t turn over the boy, Maj. Gary Blankenship said.

Two of the three men with Sanchez Aguilera were charged with felony burglary and felony first-degree kidnapping. Marcelino Zamudio Tomas, 28, of East Dolphin Street, Siler City, and the boy’s maternal uncle, Lorenzo Gonzales Coria, 18, of Sunset Street, Siler City, are being held in the Chatham County jail under $500,000 bond.

Two other men are also being detained in connection with the investigation.

Francisco Rodriguez, 23, of South Sixth Avenue, Siler City was charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm after investigators searched his home Sunday night and found a pistol that was reported stolen in Moore County, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Rodriguez is being held on an immigration detainer without bail as authorities try to determine whether he is in the United States illegally.

And Elvis Nino Hernandez is being held on an immigration detainer after officers pulled him over about midnight driving a 1998 burgundy Ford Expedition originally thought to be the one Sanchez Aguilera fled in with his son. That SUV had been pulled over earlier Sunday in Gaston County, but neither the boy nor his father were in it, and police released the vehicle and those in it.

Blankenship said investigators are still looking into whether Rodriguez or Hernandez were involved in the child’s kidnapping.

So now we're using a very expensive proceedure for Illegals now?

I remember here in NJ or NY, some time ago, that the Amber alert was not activated promptly for some family due to high cost and they were not certain if the child had been abducted or maybe ran away. {memory here} It didn't pan out well, if I remember correctly.

But we use it for ILLEGALS?

Immigration Issues, Answers Not Always Easy

    POSTED: 6:43 pm EDT October 3, 2006
    UPDATED: 6:54 pm EDT October 3, 2006

CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- An Amber Alert remains in effect for a 2-year-old boy who authorities said was taken at gunpoint by his father from his home on Sunday morning.

Investigators said five men, including the child's father, Jorge Aguilera, allegedly broke into the child's home, restrained three family members with duct tape and threatened to kill them if they did not turn over Edwin Gonzales.

On Monday, Chatham County deputies tracked down and arrested two Hispanic suspects Monday in connection with the case, but the other men, including the alleged kidnapper, remain on the run.

Investigators believe they may be in North Carolina or as far away as Mexico.

The case raises questions about immigration issues and law enforcement's abilities to track and identify illegal immigrants. Agents believe one suspect detained in the kidnapping case is in the United States illegally.

And it is unclear about the immigration status of others in the case, including Aguilera.

"The problem is we often don't know," said Chatham County District Attorney Jim Woodall, whose office prosecutes nearly 40,000 cases each year in both Chatham and Orange counties.

In most cases, Woodall said, law enforcement officers do not know a defendant's immigration status. On any given day in central North Carolina, about 50 to 120 people in custody are suspected of being in the U.S. illegally.

"It's time, it's resources -- it's the inability to work through all the layers you have to work through," Woodall said.

Law enforcement officials can access a national database maintained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that quickly supplies information on nearly 500,000 illegal immigrants.

And local officers are working more closely with immigration agents than ever before, but determining a defendant's immigration status is more complicated.

"Aliens and criminals tend to lie about their identity so they can hide from law enforcement," said immigration agent Tom O'Connell.

That means the information from the database is only as good as the information given to the officer.

The process of determining who is in the U.S. legally can get even lengthier, and typically, ICE agents do not declare a person an illegal immigrant until they have had an opportunity to meet with the individual.

"They've got to come here, interview the person," Woodall said. "They've got to get more information to make the determination because, oftentimes, identity is a big issue."

FOR THREE DAYS, IT WAS REPORTED THERE WERE FOUR INTRUDERS. ANYBODY SHOULD BE ABLE TO COUNT TO FIVE.

O'CONNELL SHOULD MOVE HIS OFFICE TO SILER CITY. THERE'S AMPLE "OPPORTUNITY TO MEET" MANY, MANY ILLEGALS THERE.

    POSTED: 2:59 pm EDT October 4, 2006
    UPDATED: 7:51 pm EDT October 4, 2006

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The FBI on Wednesday offered a $5,000 reward for information in the kidnapping of a 2-year-old Siler City boy on Sunday.

Four men, including the mother's brother, have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping. But Jorge Sanchez Aguilera, 29, the boy's father, remains on the loose, and the boy hasn't been found yet.

An Amber Alert remains in effect for Aguilera and the boy, and authorities said they believe Aguilera to be armed and dangerous.
