Officials in southwest Ohio's Butler County are backing the sheriff's bid to have 10 deputies get special immigration training.
Commissioner Mike Fox said the county commission approved the request at a meeting Thursday because Butler County is serious about focusing on illegal immigration.
"It would allow my people employees that work for the Butler County sheriff's office to actually make these arrests go through the federal government through ICE through federal court system and prosecution and actually go through the deportation process," said Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.
The county north of the Cincinnati area has gained a reputation for its tough talk on immigration.
It may take weeks or months for the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to decide whether the deputies should receive the immigration law enforcement training.
An agency spokesman said law enforcement officers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida and North Carolina have already been trained.
