DESCANSO – Border Patrol agents arrested 15 people Wednesday night after the pickup they were riding in ran off the freeway in East County.
Agents spotted the 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 about 9:30 p.m. heading east on Interstate 8 near state Route 79 where agents believe the truck's driver picked the people up, said Border Patrol agent Mark Endicott.
The driver then made a U-turn and sped away heading west on I-8, Endicott said. Agents lost sight of the vehicle as it rounded a curve and when they came upon it, they found it had run off the freeway and down an embankment, Endicott said.
A woman was found inside the truck with a minor head wound. Agents also found 14 more people hiding in the bushes and took them into custody.
All were determined to be illegal immigrants from Mexico and are subject to deportation, Endicott said.
Agents believe the driver of the truck ran off.
