State Department issues travel alert for Mexico

State Department issues travel alert for Mexico
Americans advised to stay away from prostitution, drug-dealing areas.

    updated 3:07 p.m. MT, Fri., Feb. 20, 2009
MEXICO CITY - The U.S. State Department has renewed a travel advisory warning Americans about an increase in violence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The alert does not recommend staying away from the country or any particular part of it, but advises American to stay away from prostitution and drug-dealing areas.

It recommends visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas.

The alert issued Friday says violent crime is particularly worrisome along the U.S.-Mexico border, where automatic weapons and grenades have been used in clashes between police and drug traffickers.

More than 6,000 people were killed in drug violence in Mexico last year.

Let us not forget that there are hundreds, if not thousands now demonstrating near the border due to the military being there. Another threat to Americans traveling to Mexico.

Let's face it, who could you trust? The police, the military, government are just plain corrupt.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Your absolutely right RB! There should be a travel warning issued for mexico, which reflects a greater degree of danger associated with travel to mexico because of the ongoing and protracted nature of the violence in mexico.

I have a feeling the reason is political in nature as to why our government will not issue a travel warning for mexico. If I remember correctly, were there not some politicians not too long ago , suggesting the travel alerts for mexico be lifted because the violence along the border was under control? I want to say Bill Richardson was a part of this , but I cannot recall for sure. In any event, nothing could have been further from the truth!

If you check out the State Dept website, you can see for yourself the distinction between a travel advisory and travel warning. Look at some of the countries in which a travel warning has been issued. Is the violence in mexico right now any less of a threat to Americans than some of those other countries in which a travel warning has been issued?

How many more have to be executed in mexico before the SD considers the threat sufficient enough to warn Americans to stay way from mexico?
