SAN DIEGO – More than 43 pounds of heroin valued at $400,000 was seized at the Otay Mesa border crossing in two back-to-back foiled smuggling attempts, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Monday.
Officers discovered four wrapped packages of heroin weighing about 22 pounds hidden in the spare tire of a 1992 Nissan Maxima during a secondary examination at the crossing about 9 a.m. Sunday, according to Vince Bond of Customs and Border Protection.
The driver, a 20-year-old man who is a U.S. citizen but resides in Tijuana, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers before being booked at the San Diego County Jail on suspicion of smuggling, Bond said.
About 30 minutes later, at the same crossing, officers using a narcotics detector dog discovered four wrapped packages of heroin weighing about 21.5 pounds hidden inside the spare tire of a 1999 Toyota Camry, he said.
A 32-year-old Mexican national who lives in San Ysidro was arrested by ICE agents and booked at the San Diego County Jail on suspicion of smuggling, Bond said.
Officials were unsure if the two incidents were related.
It marked the first time that black tar heroin was seized at the Otay Mesa port of entry this federal fiscal year, which began on Oct. 1.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at https://eepurl.com/cktGTn
