5 hurt in crash during Border Patrol pursuit

EAST COUNTY: Five people were seriously injured yesterday afternoon after a sedan crashed while being a crash of a sedan being pursued by the U.S. Border Patrol, officials said.

The crash occurred at 4:07 p.m. on westbound Interstate 8, just west of the East Willows Road exit, said Officer Brian Pennings of the California Highway Patrol. The car sped through a Border Patrol checkpoint east of Sunrise Highway, and was later clocked at more than 100 miles per hour, Pennings said. Witnesses said the car appeared to lose control while passing other vehicles on the right shoulder, then rolled three times and ejected four of its five occupants.

Another injured passenger was later found locked in the sedan's trunk, Pennings said. Shortly after the crash, Border Patrol agents arrested a 22-year-old man Jose Ochoa at the Viejas Casino. Pennings said the man was transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and was being held on suspicion of reckless driving and hit-and-run. driving. A Border Patrol spokesman said the agency had no comment yesterday evening.
