Thread: CA ASSEMBLYMAN CHUCK DEVORE BILL TO END INSTATE TUITION

I got this reply from Assemblyman DeVore today:


Thank you for your offer to work on this issue. It's unacceptable that California is the only state that does not provide free tuition to state colleges and universities for its Guard members. This is a crucial benefit, especially for young officer candidates and junior officers. California promotes many of its officers from within the enlisted ranks. An AA degree is required for commissioning while a bachelor's degree is needed to make captain. Yet year after year, the Democrats say we don't have the $3 million needed to make this benefit a reality.



Meanwhile, we spent $117 million to provide the in state tuition subsidy for illegal immigrants to go to college in 2005-06. The Legislative Analyst's Office estimates this cost will rise to $150 million in the 2008-09 budget year.



The first committee to hear AB 1758 will be the Assembly Higher Education Committee. It is chaired by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino (D-Pasadena) who is said be to be interested in running for Speaker of the Assembly. Assemblyman Juan Arambula (D-Fresno) and Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani (D-Stockton) are both in more conservative leaning districts. The other members of the committee are Vice Chair Shirley Horton (R-Lemon Grove), Assemblyman Jim Beall (D-San Jose), Assemblyman Paul Cook (R-Yucaipa) (and a retired Marine Corps colonel), and Assemblyman Ira Ruskin (D-Los Altos).
