RIVERSIDE - The Riverside County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with several police agencies, served 63 search warrants and arrested 39 gang members on Wednesday morning during an operation aimed at crippling two area gangs.

Sheriff Bob Doyle said the warrants were served in five different counties including Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino.
The operation was one of the largest in Riverside County, said Doyle, during a news conference at the Sheriff's Department Criminal Justice Building.

The gangs targeted were the Latino "Westside Riva" and black "Westside Project Crips," Doyle said.

The gangs operate mostly in the western half of the county and are responsible for violent assaults and homicides.

District Attorney Rod Pacheco said the two gangs have been warring with each other for several reasons, including drug sales, turf and racial differences.

The operation had been planned for nine months, and required 662 law enforcement officers and deputies, about 100 of which were from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Doyle said.

The operation will be part of an ongoing effort against the county's 11,000 active gang members, Pacheco said.

At the news conference, Pacheco, Doyle, county Supervisor John F. Tavaglione and a Riverside police representative stood behind a table, on which sat confiscated gang clothing, firearms, baseball bats inscribed with gang graffiti and $5,000 in large bills.

Methamphetamine was also confiscated but no active drug labs were found by police, Doyle said.Redlands Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department also assisted in serving the search warrants.

Felony charges will be reviewed today by the Riverside County District Attorney's office.

The names of those arrested and the charges against them were not immediately available.
