KS: House-Senate negotiators reach compromise on immigration
House-Senate negotiators reach compromise on immigration
Eds: APNewsNow. Will be led.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- House and Senate negotiators have reached agreement on a compromise immigration bill.
Negotiators spent five hours Wednesday working out the details. The House could take up the reworked bill as early as Thursday, and if it passes there, it would go to the Senate. If the Senate approves it, the bill goes to the governor.
Negotiators reworked the bill to address concerns by sheriffs that the bill could fill their jails with illegal immigrants and cost the counties more money. They also removed a requirement that employers use a federal database to verify that workers are in the country legally.
