ROSARITO, Mexico – Four people believed to be Americans were shot in the head and dumped in a notorious drug-smuggling area in northern Mexico near the border with California, Mexican police said Monday.
Police in the beach town of Rosarito, across the border from San Diego, said they discovered the bodies of three men and a woman Sunday in an abandoned car in a remote patch of scrubland near the Pacific coast.

The State Dept. needs to issue a BAN on ALL tourist travel to Mexico! I can't understand why they are ignoring the carnage that is taking place on the border and in resort areas! But then again, the US probably doesn't want to dampen Mexico's tourist $$$! Killing Americans is just considered collateral damage in the escalating drug war!!!

CNN is reporting that only one is an American and one is of unknown origin. See below.

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- Authorities in the Mexican state of Baja California are investigating the deaths of four people, including at least one American, whose bodies were found in a canyon over the weekend, a police spokesman said Monday.
The decomposed bodies of three men and one woman were found Sunday evening near Rosarito, about 20 miles south of the U.S. border, Baja California state police spokesman Rogelio Contreras said. Two of the bodies were found in a car with California license plates, and all the victims appear to have been "executed," he said.
A U.S. government official, who asked to remain anonymous, told CNN that one of the four victims was an American. The nationality of a second victim was unknown, while the others were either known or suspected to be non-Americans, the official said.
Northern Mexico has been the scene of a struggle between the government of President Felipe Calderon and drug gangs who have fought battles with rival traffickers, police and Mexican troops. The U.S. State Department travel alert warned visitors in April that international visitors have fallen victim to killings or kidnappings in the region.<div>"True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else."

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) - An American woman was among four people found dead in the Mexican beach town of Playas de Rosarito, near border with California, officials said Monday.
The 28-year-old American woman and three men were all shot in the head, assistant Baja California state prosecutor Rafael Gonzalez said. Authorities were still working to identify the men, but they were believed to be Mexican.
Officials were investigating a possible drug link, Gonzalez said.
The bodies were found Sunday in Rosarito, 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of the California border, and had already begun to decompose, suggesting they had been dead for days, officials said.
Two of the bodies were found in the back of a car with California license plates, and two others were found on the ground near the vehicle, Gonzalez said.
The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana declined to release information on the woman because her family had not yet been notified.
A wave of drug violence has swept Mexico, killing more than 2,500 people last year. Many of the killings have taken place along the U.S.-Mexico border, where cartels waging a bloody turf war with rivals have lashed back against President Felipe Calderon's military crackdown on organized crime.
A retired military major took over the police department in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, on Monday, after the chief resigned following the killings of several of his top officers.
Outgoing Chief Guillermo Prieto had seen drug cartels grow increasingly bold, taking out job ads for drug couriers, shooting rivals in the streets and issuing a hit list that threatened 22 top city police officials.
Of those 22, seven have been killed, three more were wounded and all but one of the others have quit their posts.
Gunmen in Chihuahua state, where Ciudad Juarez is located, on Monday shot and killed the top crime scene investigator for the state prosecutor's office as he left his home in the town of Hidalgo de Parral.

Four Americans die in drug-smuggling Mexican area
Four Americans die in drug-smuggling Mexican area

ROSARITO, Mexico (Reuters) - Four people believed to be Americans were shot in the head and dumped in a notorious drug-smuggling area in northern Mexico near the California border, Mexican police said on Monday.
Police in the beach town of Rosarito, across the border from San Diego, said they discovered the bodies of three men and a woman on Sunday in an abandoned car in a remote patch of scrubland near the Pacific coast.
Police concluded the victims were U.S. citizens because the vehicle had California license plates, the men appeared to be black, the woman was white and a U.S. driver's license was found in the car, the spokesman said.
Murders have jumped in Mexico this year, the bulk of them linked to a war between rival drug cartels and security forces that has killed some 1,300 people across Mexico since January. But it is unusual for foreigners to be the victims.
"The bodies had been there for at least a week. They were spotted by local people out hunting," a municipal police spokesman said.
The area where the bodies were found is one of many along the border that gangs use to smuggle marijuana and cocaine into the United States.
In Chihuahua state, which borders Texas, gunmen killed senior police officer Jose Martinez as he left his home in the city of Parral on Monday morning, the state attorney general's office said.
Martinez was head of criminal investigations for southern Chihuahua.
"IT'S A WAR"
President Felipe Calderon, who sent out thousands of troops and federal police to battle drug cartels when he took power in December 2006, said on Monday the escalation in violence was reason to press on.
"It's a serious fight, it's a war, and it means assuming the consequences," he told a news conference following talks with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"There is no way the Mexican government will give up this fight. Our pledge and decision is to carry on until we rescue Mexico fully from a situation of abuse and crime," he said.
Drug violence killed more than 2,500 people in Mexico last year. Grisly slayings in 2008 include the beheading this month of a man whose head was dumped on top of a car in the northern city of Monterrey.
Half a dozen high-ranking police officers have been killed this month alone.
Violence has spilled over from the rough city of Tijuana into once-quiet Rosarito and its outlying areas as gangs fight over smuggling routes into California.
