(Friday, June 05, 2009)

Blaine, Wash. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers took into custody a man wanted in Miami for attempted murder, armed assault and burglary, after he was turned over to them by officers of the Canada Border Services Agency at the Pacific Highway port of entry on June 2.

CBP officers arrested Ediel Duarte-Rabelo, 24, a citizen of Cuba, when a name check revealed that he was the subject of a National Criminal Information Center felony warrant. Initially his true identity was uncertain due to the fact that he was not in possession of a passport or other proper border crossing identification.

Duarte-Rabelo’s fingerprints were electronically recorded and digitally compared in the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System to confirm his identity. IAFIS is a computerized communication database designed to share fingerprint information among federal law enforcement agencies.

“This arrest typifies the close and collaborative relationship among all law enforcement agencies along the Washington and British Columbia border,â€
