Cuban man pleads guilty to mail fraud, ID theft


LOS ANGELES

A Cuban man has pleaded guilty to posing as an attorney so he could represent detainees in immigration court in San Pedro.

Court documents show Raul Ernest Alonso-Prieto reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors that was entered in court last week.

Prosecutors say Alonso-Prieto was released from a Southern California immigration detention center in 2006 because the U.S. does not deport people to Cuba. A year later he used a lawyer's California Bar number to represent detainees in immigration court.

Alonso-Prieto pleaded guilty to mail fraud and identity theft. He faces up to 22 years in prison when he is sentenced April 12.

Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office, declined comment.

A message was left for Alonso-Prieto's attorney.
