Customs officer arrested in Otay Mesa

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer has been arrested on two federal charges, the FBI said today.

Luis Francisco Alarid was charged in a federal arrest warrant with conspiracy to import a controlled substance and conspiracy to smuggle illegal aliens, FBI spokesman Darrell Foxworth said.

He was arrested about 6:15 p.m. Friday near Elrose and Dearborn drives in Otay Mesa by members of the San Diego Border Corruption Task Force, Foxworth said.

Alarid was booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown San Diego and is scheduled to appear Monday before a U.S. magistrate.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. District Attorney's Office in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A Customs and Border Protection officer is accused of conspiring to smuggle drugs and illegal immigrants.

The FBI says Luis Francisco Alarid was arrested Friday night and is due to make an initial appearance Monday before a federal magistrate judge. He is being held at a San Diego jail.

CBP spokesman Vince Bond says the 31-year-old officer has been placed on paid leave. He's worked at San Diego's Otay Mesa border crossing, which borders Tijuana, Mexico.

The FBI and CBP declined to elaborate on the case. No one answered the phone at a San Diego-area listing for a Luis Alarid.

The U.S. attorney's office in San Diego will prosecute the case.

SAN DIEGO – A Border Patrol agent accused of taking more than $200,000 in bribes to allow illegal immigrants and marijuana into the country was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury.
Luis Francisco Alarid, 31, of San Diego, was named in a six-count indictment that charges him with conspiracy to smuggle more than 100 kilograms of marijuana, conspiracy to transport illegal immigrants and bribery.

Alarid is accused of committing the alleged crimes since February 2008, authorities said.

In March, the agent permitted a car driven by Alarid's uncle with 18 illegal immigrants and 170 pounds of marijuana to enter the United States, according to authorities. On May 3, a caravan of four vehicles carrying illegal immigrants was allowed into the country, authorities said.

Alarid, who has been in custody since last month, faces a maximum sentence of 90 years in prison if convicted.
