SAN DIEGO – A 23-year-old driver was arrested and $528,000 worth of cocaine was seized Tuesday at the Border Patrol checkpoint near Pine Valley, authorities said.
Border Patrol agents said a drug-sniffing dog indicated there might be drugs in the Mitsubishi Eclipse the man was driving after the man stopped at the Interstate 8 checkpoint in East County around 9:40 a.m.
Agents using an X-ray spotted numerous objects in the car's lower rocker panels and found 20 bundles of cocaine weighing more than 52 pounds hidden inside, officials said.
The driver was a Mexican national who had documents allowing him to travel legally in the United States, officials said.
