NC-Hearing set for college policy on undocumented immigrants

Hearing set for college policy on undocumented immigrants

The North Carolina Community College System will hold a public hearing on a policy that would allow undocumented immigrants to attend community colleges.

The hearing will be 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 18 at the Archives and History/State Library Building auditorium, 109 E. Jones St. in Raleigh.

Community college officials are holding the hearing to comply with state law.

In September, the community colleges board voted to initiate a process that would allow this policy change. The public hearings are the first step and will be followed by a recommendation from the policy committee to the full board.

The full board's decision will be sent to the Office of Administrative Hearings in Raleigh, which will check whether the decision complies with existing laws.

The policy would allow undocumented immigrants to attend N.C. community colleges if they graduate from a U.S. high school, pay out-of-state tuition and do not displace a state or U.S. resident from a class or program.

Attendees at the Dec. 18 public hearing must sign in and will be given numbers. Each speaker will have a maximum of three minutes. Comments also can be written and placed in a drop box the day of the hearing or e-mailed to publiccomments@nccommunitycolleges.edu before 5 p.m. Dec. 18.

Statements can be mailed to Q. Shante Martin, 200 W. Jones St., 5001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-5001.

Is this the fifth or sixth time they consider reversing the reversal of their previous reversal of this policy? This is getting embarrasing.
