Father (Illegal Immigrant) of child bride gets year in jail

GREENFIELD, Calif. -- A man (illegal immigrant) who police say gave his 14-year-old daughter for marriage in exchange for cash, alcohol and food has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Marcelino Martinez had faced multiple charges, including procuring a child for sex, aiding and abetting statutory rape. His sentencing Thursday followed a plea deal that reduced the charges to just child endangerment.

Prosecutors say Martinez asked the 18-year-old suitor to pay a dowry - $16,000 cash, drinks and meat for the wedding party. Martinez denies he ever agreed to the marriage.

The families involved are part of an indigenous group from Mexico where arranged marriages of teenagers are common.

Immigration authorities have placed a deportation hold on him and will return him to Mexico once he serves his sentence
