U.S. law does not bar illegal immigrants from enrolling.

The Bush administration's Department of Homeland Security has formally advised North Carolina that federal law doesn't prohibit admitting illegal immigrants to community colleges and public universities. That word – delivered in a letter last week from former Mecklenburg Sheriff Jim Pendergraph, now a federal immigration enforcement official – means the Department of Community Colleges may ignore advice from N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper's office earlier this year. That advice had prompted Community College System President Scott Ralls to reverse his predecessor's policy allowing campuses to enroll undocumented aliens.

Mr. Pendergraph's July 21 letter to the state – signed “Sheriff (Ret.) Jim Pendergraphâ€

Wasn't Pendergraph arresting illegals all over the place as sheriff? It even made national news. Talk about a flip-flop!!!

Yeah, he's moved from illegal immigration fighter when he was sheriff of Mecklenberg County, NC to illegal immigration enabler when he hired on at the DHS. Chertoff and his Bushies have gotten to him.

The editorial makes the wrong conclusion the illegal aliens will not be able to find work here if there is screening. It makes more sense to talk of the benefit to the Third World if returning citizens are trained but at whose expense. It should not be our on top of free K-12 education at our expense and against our democratic will.If North Carolina reinstates the out of state rates I will be accepting. I hope the out off state rates are not heavily subsidized.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Civitas Institute Decision Maker Poll Results of NC voters:

    - 69% of N.C. voters oppose providing education benefits to illegal immigrants (August 2005).
    - 68% of N.C. voters oppose allowing illegal immigrants to enroll in community colleges (February 200.

Its far beyond time that the NC General Assembly abides by the will of the NC people in this matter. Attendance at any institution of higher education in NC should be reserved for citizens and LEGAL immigrants.

South Carolina has already taken action and passed legislation denying illegal aliens attendance in colleges in their state. NC needs to follow suit.

There will have to be a serious shake up in our legislative body for that to happen. Don't expect any serious initiatives against illegal immigration while the liberals remain in control.
