    LA population hits 4 million

    >>> DATABASE: Search your neighborhood and see how the population has changed from last year.
The population of Los Angeles has passed 4 million for the first time, state officials announced this morning.
The city's population grew by 1.2 percent last year, to reach 4,045,873 residents as of Jan. 1, 2008, according to the state Department of Finance.

The new figures represent a backtracking from an announcement last year that L.A. had actually passed that mark in January 2007. State officials now say they have revised those earlier figures, and the mark wasn't hit until later in the year.

The state as a whole grew last year by 1.3 percent to 38,049,462 people.

State demographic experts said California's population has been growing more slowly this decade, a trend which is driven in part by the high cost of housing. Even though the rate of immigration remains steady, a greater number of Californians have been leaving for cheaper states. But the recent economic downturn and housing slump hasn't made that trend any worse.

"Right now (the economy) doesn't seem to be having a whole lot of effect per se on population growth," said Mary Heim, chief of the demographic unit in the Department of Finance.

"We estimate there have been for the last couple of years more Californians leaving than coming from other states. That doesn't count immigration - that is just domestic migration. We think that is continuing, but it hasn't accelerated at this point in time."

The tragic thing is that the population is most likely well over 4 million. Illegal aliens are not known for their eagerness to participate in being counted.

Now, I would like to know just how LA plans to continue supporting these numbers and I don't mean just financially. There is just no way this can continue out there without a literal collapse.
