SAN DIEGO – An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent chased down a hit-and-run suspect who fled on foot Monday following a traffic accident in Rancho Penasquitos, authorities reported.
The federal officer was driving through the northern San Diego district about 6 a.m. when he saw a motorist in a Chrysler Cirrus run a red light at Park Village and Black Mountain roads, according to USBP public affairs.

The sedan crashed into a Honda Accord, then continued on for a short distance and came to a stop, at which point the driver jumped out and bolted, officials said.

The agent pulled over, ran after the fleeing man, caught him nearby and took him into custody.

San Diego police arrested the suspect, an illegal alien whose name was not released, on suspicion of hit-and-run, driving without a license and providing false documents to a peace officer.

No injuries were reported.
