Email to a friendPost a CommentPrinter-friendlyAt the Board of Directors meeting held at the National Council of La Raza office building in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Feb. 28, a decision was made to begin identifying Texas Migrant Council, Inc. dba New America Corporation by the new name of TMC."Although the roots of TMC began as a mobile Migrant Head Start program, it has evolved into a multi-state, multi-service corporation that provides education to children and families, child care and workforce development, mentoring teachers and communities, training on successful healthy marriage practices and educating parents in identifying quality childcare," stated Mary Capello, CEO of TMC.

"With services throughout Texas and in states such as Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Indiana we have chosen a name that honors the history of the corporation and will lead us into the next 35 years," stated Sandy Martinez, board president.

TMC, which provides teaching and mentoring programs in many communities, will use "Teaching and Mentoring Communities" to describe the services TMC provides.

TMC will begin working with marketing leaders to create a logo that will identify TMC as a leader in strengthening families and communities.

    Background
In 1971, Texas Migrant Council, Inc., (TMC) was incorporated as a private nonprofit Migrant Head Start provider for children of migrant farm workers. In its early years, the staff served children and their families along the Texas-Mexico border for the first nine months of the program; as families migrated, so did the staff.
The Migrant Head Start centers would close at the end of the season in Texas and relocate the operation to different parts of the country where the Migrant families found agricultural work. Today, its Migrant and Seasonal Head Start program serves close to 8,000 children ages birth through 5 years and their families.

TMC, Inc. has been administering Child Care Management Services (CCMS) programs since 1991 in the Greater Austin region and a One Stop Workforce development program in the Golden Crescent region of Texas providing services to more than 15,000 children and 20,000 adults in both programs. TMC is the pilot program for the Texas Early Education Model (TEEM); a state program for the development and demonstration of curriculums and approaches designed to ensure through mentoring that children enter school ready to learn.

Also, every year TMC celebrates Dia de los Niños (Day of the Child) at our different Head Start Centers. As the largest sponsor of this event in the nation, TMC empowers the children of the communities it serves and the surrounding areas through educationally focused activities.

In 2006, the Board of Directors made a decision to focus on its growth as a national leader in the non profit community and began doing business as New America Corporation (NAC).
