DNA database could help ID illegal immigrants who die in Ariz. desert
09:05 AM
Mexican and local Arizona authorities are trying to create a searchable DNA database to help match Mexican families looking for missing loved ones with the remains of illegal immigrants who died in the desert, the Arizona Daily Star reports.
The project brings together Mexican consulates in Arizona and the Pima County Medical examiner's office.
While the Mexican government, since 2005, has used DNA samples to make some matches, most were specific cases, such as bodies found with some identifying evidence.
The new project would aid cases where officials have only human remains and no other lead, the Star says.
Although the bureaucratic work is already on track, the emphasis now is on getting families of missing relatives to submit samples for a database and start looking for possible matches.
The Star says 2,000 people have died in the Arizona desert in the past decade.

There are police departments around the country that have a backlog of DNA test waiting to be done on Rape Kits because of the cost of the test and the economy. So why should we waiste time and money to identify dead criminals?
