Police beef up presence after Hawthorne high school brawl

Police boosted patrols Friday in and around Hawthorne High School to prevent a new outbreak of violence a day after a brawl involving dozens of students, officials said.


No new disturbances occurred, said Superintendent Cheryl White of the Centinela Valley Union High School District. She said Thursday's incident was out of the norm.


One male student was arrested Thursday for felony assault on an officer and brought to Eastlake Juvenile Hall, said police Capt. John Beerling. Twenty-five other students were cited and released, he said.


Police and school officials said the brawl was gang related and may have been caused by tensions between Latino and Tongan students.


"There's information that it was gang involved and also racially involved," Beerling said.


The fight broke out Thursday afternoon in the cafeteria during lunch, White said.


The original combatants were soon surrounded by 50 others, officials said.


About 60 officers from five law enforcement agencies rushed to the campus, Beerling said.


The violence was quelled by officers in riot helmets who used pepper spray and carried shotguns that fire bean bag rounds, officials said.


Three officers were injured by thrown objects, but they were able to return to duty on Friday, Beerling said.
