The FBI is stepping up its search for a Sugar Grove man who disappeared three years ago after he was charged with dealing drugs.

On March 18, 2003, Daniel Mata, 28, of the 0-99 block of Sugar Lane, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, marijuana trafficking and conspiracy.

Mata has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt since June 2004 when he could not be found in Illinois and was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, the FBI said.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, police have reason to believe Mata may have fled to Texas, where a car was registered to him at a San Antonio address. Mata's relatives live, or have lived, at the same address, the affidavit said.

The FBI described Mata as a 5-foot-8, 200-pound Hispanic with black hair and brown eyes. Mata is an alleged member of the Latin Kings street gang and has several prior arrests, including possession and use of a firearm, the FBI said. Mata should be considered armed and dangerous, according to an FBI press release.

Anyone recognizing Mata or having any information about his current whereabouts is asked to call the Chicago FBI office at (312) 421-6700 or the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team at (630) 554-2114.
