    The Nativists Are Restless

    Published: January 31, 2009

The relentlessly harsh Republican campaign against immigrants has always hidden a streak of racialist extremism. Now after several high-water years, the Republican tide has gone out, leaving exposed the nativism of fringe right-wingers clinging to what they hope will be a wedge issue.

Last week at the National Press Club in Washington, a group seeking to speak for the future of the Republican Party declared that its November defeats in Congressional races stemmed not from having been too hard on foreigners, but too soft.

The group, the American Cause, released a report arguing that anti-immigration absolutism was still the solution for the party’s deep electoral woes, actual voting results notwithstanding. Rather than “pander to pro-amnesty Hispanics and swing voters,â€

    The Nativists Are Restless, Continued
    By The Editorial Board

An editorial in The Times on Sunday examined the role of nativism in the immigration debate. Since then, we’ve had a lot of mail about the editorial, some asking what it was based on.

The editorial was pegged to a new study by the American Cause, a right-wing think tank that analyzed the 2008 Congressional elections through a nativist lens, arguing that Republican House candidates failed by being too soft on immigration and thus alienating white people. It urged the party to give up trying to appeal to the growing Latino electorate, as President Bush tried to do, and rather to reject it, and to redouble efforts to pass hard-core anti-immigration measures.

“Whatever gains, if any, pandering to Hispanics gives is greatly outweighed by loss of the White Vote, which is more important,â€

    NEW YORK TIMES

We need to boycott the NY paper. Mr. SLIM from MEXICO loaned 241 MILLION dollars to the paper to keep it afloat.

This guy SLIM wants open borders because his own country is being destroyed:

'Seattle Times': Carlos Slim Stake a Danger to 'N.Y. Times'

    By Mark Fitzgerald

    Published: January 27, 2009 9:38 AM ET
CHICAGO Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu's $250 million loan to The New York Times Co. is "an ominous move" by a "capitalist with loyalties to a foreign state," The Seattle Times said in an unsigned editorial Tuesday.

"Major media companies should not be in the hands of a capitalist with loyalties to a foreign state," the editorial declared.

The Seattle Times, owned by a Blethen family-controlled company, has often parted company with the great majority of the newspaper industry on media ownership issues. It opposes repeal of the 1975 ban on same-market common ownership of newspapers and radio or television, for instance -- something the biggest industry organization, the Newspaper Association of America, made a priority for years.

Tuesday's editorial states the paper's principle right in the headline: "Newspaper ownership matters in American democracy."

Slim has said he has no intention of using the loan -- and an earlier purchase of a 6.4% stake in Times Co. -- to influence the paper's coverage or editorializing.

"Perhaps that is so, but it would have been better had the question never come up," the Seattle Times editorial said. The editorial notes that Slim became the richest man in Mexico, and probably the second-richest in the world, by buying the monopoly Mexican phone system from the government. And it notes the loan agreement with Times Co. gives him warrants that could increase his stake to 17%, though that stock would not include the super-voting shares with which the Ochs and Sulzberger family control the company.

"Still, the move is ominous," the editorial said. "Ownership matters. Slim is a capitalist with a close connection to the Mexican state. He is buying a substantial stake in the most politically influential newspaper in the United States, and he easily has the wealth to buy the whole thing."

For the record, The Times does not support open borders, and never has.

This isn't about Republicans being anti-immigrant (it's actually anti- ILLEGAL immigrant). There were no greater cheerleaders for amnesty than John McCain and George Bush - both so called "Republicans" last time I checked. Yet somehow, this pandering did not attract Hispanic voters as the GOP had hoped it would.

Just another attempt to demonize the GOP as "anti-immigrant!"

I can't read it anymore. Another big city newspaper turned into a "college rag" by a group of Left-wing extremists.
