Suspected arsonist caught at border

CAMPO — A Mexican man suspected in a series of Southern California arson fires was arrested in Campo while trying to enter the country illegally, Border Patrol officials said Friday.

Juan Silva Lomeli, 44, was found hiding in a brushy area north of the border along with two other illegal immigrants on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

After conducting a records check, agents discovered Silva was suspected in a string of arsons in Carlsbad, Oceanside and Los Angeles. He was turned over to arson investigators at the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

Authorities in Carlsbad and Oceanside could not be immediately reached for details on the investigations.
