SAN DIEGO — Two U.S. Border Patrol agents were assaulted in separate incidents this week while trying to detain people who were crossing the border illegally, federal officials said Wednesday.

The first incident occurred about 8 p.m. Monday in the Otay Mountain area. A Border Patrol agent was hit on the face and head by a man he was arresting, Border Patrol Agent Jerry Conlin said. The agent did not require hospital treatment.

The man will be charged with assault on a federal agent, Conlin said.

The second incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in San Ysidro. A Border Patrol Agent saw four men jump the primary border fence and run to a secondary fence with a ladder. He caught one of them, and the other three fled back into Mexico and threw rocks at the agent, Conlin said. The agent was not hit.

In fiscal year 2012, there were 133 reported assaults against Border Patrol agents in the San Diego sector, compared to 77 in fiscal year 2011, Conlin said.
