    NOTE NAME OF COMMERCE SECRETARY!

Commerce secretary to promote CAFTA on trip

    WASHINGTON

Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez will lead a trade mission to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras in October, showing off opportunities to U.S. companies after approval of the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

The trade trip, announced yesterday, will be the first to the region after last week's congressional passage of the politically contentious CAFTA.

CAFTA, which passed the House by a two-vote margin, was signed by President Bush on Tuesday.

CAFTA - the trade pact with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic - eliminates trade barriers and opens the region wider to U.S. goods and services. It also lowers obstacles to investment in the area and strengthens protections for intellectual property.

Gutierrez and a group of U.S. businesses that have not yet been selected will travel to Guatemala City, Guate-mala; San Pedro Sula, Honduras; and San Salvador, El Salvador, the U.S. Commerce Department said.

"We want to make sure that we fully take advantage of this very powerful trade agreement," Gutierrez said. "We are going to be introducing businesses to representatives of the Chambers of Commerce, industry trade associations, potential business partners and government officials so that they can learn first hand what they need to do to do business in Central America."

Gutierrez said he anticipates that 10 to 15 business representatives will accompany him on the trip, Oct. 16-22. They might include those in automotive parts and services equipment, chemicals, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, printing and graphics and textiles, the commerce department said.

Critics say that the trade agreement will cost U.S. jobs, particularly in the sugar and textile industries, a claim that Gutierrez and other supporters have disputed.

"We believe that this should be a net contributor (to jobs) given that we'll be able to export more to Central America," Gutierrez said. U.S. exports to the region are now at about $15 billion.

He said he envisions the trip more as an educational opportunity than a dealmaking one for companies.

"If, during that trip, something does arise and it leads to a business deal - that's probably a stroke of luck," he said.

HEY!! I want to go. I think every American business person should get to go, don't you? This is the United States of Fair and Equal Opportunity. I might find some opportunities there for "free trade". Did I get a letter? Did I get an invitation? I might want to try and expand some of the Central American companies INTO the United States, you know get them CLOSER to their ultimate destination. You know, SAVE all those TRUCK MILES and FUEL COSTS!! This is an ILLEGAL MISSION. Who does this Cuban/Mexican US Secretary of Commerce think he represents? 10 to 15 corporations? Well....NO....you represent ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS AND BUSINESSES....not just your special little cadre of "friends".

Gutierrez said he anticipates that 10 to 15 business representatives will accompany him on the trip, Oct. 16-22. They might include those in automotive parts and services equipment, chemicals, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, printing and graphics and textiles, the commerce department said.
Oh boy...there goes the Automotive Parts and Service Equipment Manufactureres, there goes your Chemical and Aerospace and Pharmaceuticals and Printing and Graphics and TEXTILES JOBS.... OUT OF THE USA with their HANDS HELD ALL THE WAY BY an appointee of the El Presidente, paid by the American Taypayer.

"If, during that trip, something does arise and it leads to a business deal - that's probably a stroke of luck," he said.
Is this man a CON ARTIST OR WHAT?? A stroke of luck. What does he do play numerology or consult his psychic to promote our interests? LUCK. Hey, cancel the invitation to all of our few remaining manufactureres and haul some VEGAS BOYS down there. Then, they can build some businesss based on luck and games of chance and create some hotel cleaning jobs in Central America and we'll keep our aerospace, chemical, printing and graphics, automotive parts and textiles, thank you.

Isn't it ODD that no one from AGRICULTURE WAS MENTIONED? Wasn't this supposed to be good for FARMERS?

How the American Public can sit still for this BOGGLES my mind.
