MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The U.S. Border Patrol says two farmworkers suspected of being illegal immigrants arrested during a Vermont traffic stop have been released on citations to appear in court at a later date.
The two were arrested Tuesday following a traffic stop by the state police in Middlesex.
The case led to protests and the arrest of 3 activists who felt police had used racial profiling to arrest the farm workers who were not driving the speeding car and had committed no other offense.
The case prompted Gov. Peter Shumlin to ask whether Vermont State Police followed "bias-free" policing policies in the stop and he called for the agency to conduct an internal investigation. State Police Col. Thomas L'Esperance later ordered such an investigation.
