Calif. High School Students Protest Immigration Bill
Larger Rally Planned In LA On Saturday

    POSTED: 1:24 pm EST March 24, 2006
    UPDATED: 1:35 pm EST March 24, 2006

LOS ANGELES -- About 150 Huntington Park High school students left their classrooms on Friday morning to protest an immigration bill due before Congress on Monday.

Television images showed a half-mile-long line of students marching down a street, carrying flags and signs.

The student protest came a day before a larger rally planned in Los Angeles on Saturday, in which immigrant-rights groups were scheduled to gather to protest the legislation.

The bill seeks to build more walls along the U.S.-Mexico border and make helping illegal immigrants a criminal offense.

Shouldn't they be rounded up for truancy? I mean, for college students to walk out is one thing--college is voluntary. For high school age students there is no voluntariness to attending--you attend unless sick or some other valid excuse. I'm not saying they don't have a right to an opinion, but they need to exercise that right AFTER school hours.

You're darned right! It just shows they have absolutely NO RESPECT FOR OUR LAWS!!!

Where are the police? Also, aren't school officials supposed to report truancy to the authorities, i.e. call the police? What are the school officials doing? Don't tell me - they support the students!!!

School Walk Outs Protest Immigration Proposals
    By Anna Gorman
    Times Staff Writer

    10:40 AM PST, March 24, 2006

A day before organizers planned to rally against immigration restrictions, dozens of students walked out of Huntington Park High School in Los Angeles this morning in sympathy.

The Saturday march is being organized to protest proposed federal legislation criminalizing illegal immigrants and erecting a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.

Students from two other schools, Washington Preparatory High School and San Fernando High School, walked out but quickly returned to classes, according to Ellen Morgan, spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

"We are aware of the protest tomorrow," Morgan said, who said the youthful protesters were demonstrating against immigration restrictions. "We don't know whether this has anything to do with that."

Some 73% of the 877,010 LAUSD students this year are Latino, Morgan said. Huntington Park High School has about 2,850 students; an estimated 150 walked out.

Morgan described the actions at the other two high schools as "attempts to walk out."

Saturday's march is being organized by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles.

Huntington High Students Protest Immigration Bill
Massive LA Demonstration Planned On Saturday

    POSTED: 10:17 am PST March 24, 2006
    UPDATED: 11:05 am PST March 24, 2006

LOS ANGELES -- Students from Huntington Park High School staged a walkout on Friday to protest an immigration bill before Congress that would strengthen enforcement of immigration laws, authorities said.

Sbout 8:30 a.m., roughly 500 students walked out of the school and splintered into two groups, said Ellen Morgan of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Some 300 students walked toward Bell High and 200 headed to South Gate High, she said.

"At this time, those schools are on lockdown, but we have a large number of school officials and law enforcement following the students because our main concern is, certainly, for the safety of all of our students that walked out," Morgan said late this morning.

The campuses were locked down -- meaning no one can come in or leave -- before the Huntington Park High students reached them, said LAUSD's Olga Quinones.

Students who initially walked to Bell High then opted to congregate with the others near South Gate High, she said.

They are not allowed on the grounds of either school, and Huntington Park High also is in lockdown made, Quinones said.

The students were protesting HR 4427, which would "amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to strengthen enforcement of the immigration laws, to enhance border security and for other purposes," according to its sponsors.

Opponents of the measure have called it racist and said it would penalize legal immigrants for associating with "illegals."

My husband graduated from Huntington Park High in the early '60s.
I was just surprised that with such a large Hispanic population only 150
    would have waked out.
