Cameras Capture Dramatic Border Chase

Border Patrol releases dramatic video of a chase along the border.

Agents say Thursday morning around 9:30, they watched as three trucks drove up to vehicle barriers along Levee Road. They say a crew apparently hopped out of the first truck, cut through the barriers, and allowed two trucks loaded with marijuana to pass through.

Agent Ben Vik with the Yuma Sector Border Patrol describes the harrowing chase captured on one of the agency's tower cameras.

"You'll see the two vehicles driving down the east bank of the west Main Canal. The driver and the passenger jump out the first vehicle, jump down the bank into the Colorado River, into Mexico," says Vik.

Video shows the occupants of the second vehicle following suit as they ditch the drugs and run back into Mexico. Then, Border Patrol alerted Mexican law enforcement.

"The Mexican police sent a response to that area and managed to apprehend two of the subjects."

Agents seized 327 bundles of marijuana weighing more than two tons. Agents say smugglers are now sending larger drug loads as the Border Patrol tightens security.

"To us that's an indicator of the desperation that the drug trafficking organizations are feeling here in Yuma Sector. It's not easy to bring their contraband."
