Montreal, Que (AHN) - The RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency has seized 160 kilograms of cocaine they discovered in a shipment from Mexico. The drugs were found in a shipment of frozen mango puree when it arrived at a port in Montreal. It is estimated the drugs are worth $38 million

Police say they have arrested five Mexican Nationals with visitor status in Canada. The suspects are charged with importing and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. Two of the suspects operated a legal yet bogus food import company.

Sgt. André Potvin told reporters the haul is the largest maritime-bound drug seizure in the RCMP's history.

RCMP seizes cocaine found in frozen mango puree

Close to 160 kilograms of cocaine from Mexico, hidden in buckets of frozen mango puree, have been seized by the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in Montreal. "Indicators" led the CBSA to a container that arrived in the Port of Montreal from Mexico, the RCMP said in a press release Tuesday.

"It's very significant," RCMP Staff Sgt. Andre Potvin said Tuesday about the bust. "Basically if you look at street level -- at $20-a-gram -- you're looking in the vicinity of $38 million (worth of drugs)." The drugs were found bagged in individual plastic packets of roughly four kilograms each.

Police said the alleged drug importers operated under the cover of a company created in 2005 called Quality Mexport. The press release states that the "vigilance of a border services officer at the Container Examination Center in Montreal, combined with the use of various contraband detection tools, enabled the CBSA to find and seize the cocaine."

Five Mexicans, all holding visitor status in Canada, have been arrested and detained. "It is the largest ever maritime shipment from Mexico seized," CTV Montreal's Herb Luft reported Tuesday. The suspects are charged with importing and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. "They don't believe that these were the actual distributors and traffickers (and) that there must have been another gang, a well-organized one," said Luft.
