Man found dead near Pinal County rest stop, 2nd man wounded

    The Associated Press
    Thursday, April 14, 2011 9:30 am

STANFIELD — A man has been discovered dead near where a second man was found wounded at an Interstate 8 rest stop in Pinal County.

The wounded man said he was with a large group of illegal immigrants when assailants attacked, Pinal County Sheriff’s spokesman Tim Gaffney said.

Deputies, Arizona Department of Public Safety officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents are searching the desert for possible assailants, witnesses or other possible victims near Antelope Peak, he said.

The wounded man told officers he was with about 15 fellow migrants had made camp in the desert late Wednesday when another group of men opened fire.

The wounded man fled into the desert and wound up at the I-8 stop west of Stanfield. He was taken to a Phoenix-area hospital Thursday morning.

I guess the illegal aliens supporters now see what happens when laws are denied enforcement in any and all States. Sheriff Paul Babeu of Pinal County has stated many times the County is flooding with criminal aliens, but has been rejected support and the State leaders have even said the Sheriff is spreading untrue statements. The truth has been revealed, what’s next?

Shootout Near Pinal County Rest Stop Leaves 1 Dead

By 1 p.m. six individuals had been detained

Updated: Thursday, 14 Apr 2011, 3:29 PM MDT

STANFIELD, Ariz. - Sheriff's deputies in Pinal County believe a shooting that left one man dead and a second wounded involved drug smugglers who were ambushed by a rip off crew.

Pinal County Sheriff's spokesman Tim Gaffney says they received a 911 call about 2:15 a.m. that a 35-year-old wounded man had made his way to a rest stop Interstate 8.

He told deputies he was with a large group of illegal immigrants when assailants attacked. The man was flown to Maricopa Medical Center for emergency surgery.

Gaffney says the evidence gathered so far indicates the 15 individuals were smuggling marijuana into the country from Mexico.

Deputies found the original crime scene a half mile from I-8, near Antelope Peak, about 8:30 a.m. There they found the body of a dead man, a handgun, and signs of a shootout.

The dead man is believed to be in his 30s.

A search for the rip off crew and the rest of the drug smugglers is continuing near Stanfield. Detectives developed information leading them to believe the marijuana, the rip off crew, and any other individuals involved were taken to a home in Stanfield, and various law enforcement agencies surrounded the home at 1 p.m.

    Six individuals have been detained.

The incident occurred in the Vekol Valley area, which is the same area where Deputy Louie Puroll was shot , which is an area known for drug and human smuggling. Antelope Peak is a known smuggling route, Gaffney says.

Two other illegal immigrants were shot in June 2010 in the same area.

Six in custody in connection with fatal Pinal County smuggler shooting

By Brady McCombs Arizona Daily Star
    Thursday, April 14, 2011 9:30 am

Six people have been taken into custody in Stanfield to be questioned about an early Thursday morning shooting between suspected drug smugglers in Pinal County that left one dead and one wounded.

At 1 p.m., officers from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies surrounded a home in Stanfield where they believe marijuana stolen in the shooting by a rip crew was taken, said Pinal County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tim Gaffney.

Investigators believe the crew opened fire on a group of 15 drug smugglers early Thursday west of Casa Grande in a popular smuggling corridor. Following that shooting, members of the rip crew carried the marijuana to a car that was stopped at Interstate 8 and took it to Stanfield, Gaffney said.

The six who were arrested this afternoon may have been involved in the shooting.

Officials found out about the shooting at 2:15 a.m. when the Arizona Department of Public Safety received a 911 call from a woman in Phoenix who said her father had been shot in the desert south of Interstate 8 and had walked to a rest stop on the highway about 25 miles west of Casa Grande, said .

DPS officers went to the rest stop, and after finding the man with a gunshot wound, called the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, he said. Sheriff’s deputies went to the rest stop near mile post 150 on I-8 and found a 35-year-old Mexican man who had been shot once. After being treated at the scene, he was flown by air ambulance to a hospital where surgery was performed. He is currently alive, Gaffney said.

Later at about 8:30 a.m., officers found a second victim who had been fatally shot. He was found in a layup area near Antelope Peak, which is located about two miles south of Interstate 8, Gaffney said. He was a man in his mid-30s from Mexico.

Before he was flown by air ambulance, the wounded man told deputies that he was traveling with a group of 14 others who had crossed the Mexican border, Gaffney said. They were approached by another group that opened fire on them, the man told deputies.

Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies have found evidence that lead them to believe that he and the group were smuggling marijuana toward Interstate 8, Gaffney said. The shooters were likely from a ‘rip crew,’ a term used to describe criminal groups that rob and assault drug runners and illegal immigrants.

Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies, DPS officers and Border Patrol agents searched the area all morning looking for suspects and witnesses.

This shooting occurred in the same area where two suspected drug smugglers were shot and killed in June 2010 and where ex-Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy Louis Puroll reported being shot by smugglers he had been tracking on April 30, 2010.

So, the drug war has crossed over into the U.S. now? What actions will be taken to prevent it from becoming much worse?

The County, State and Federal Law Enforcement in the area had better work together to do something real soon.

The Pinal County Sheriff has pleaded for assistance John; however, he is always ignored and they tell the Sheriff to ("quieting it down") and stop spreading untrue information. The border towns are more safer now than they ever have been.
